I agree - a setup with slf4j + log4j could be nice and seems like a common way out there. But perhaps you used some other logging impl?

I think this page says it all:
http://www.slf4j.org/manual.html

When developing i first tried the simple impl, but it cannot output debug messages so I switched to log4j.

I haven't evaluated their claimed speed advantage myself, but I like their parametrized log statement. See:
